C Lazy U Ranch
The C Lazy U Ranch, located several miles north of Granby in Grand County, Colorado, was traditionally a horse and cattle ranch that in later years has become a popular dude ranch. Michael W. West and Associates was asked to prepare a geologic hazards assessment for an area of the ranch where new vacation homes are to be built. Previous studies in the area identified large landslides. Our task was to evaluate the landslides and to determine if they are still active. We were also asked to perform subsurface investigation for several homesites, to prepare a geotechnical report with paving recommendations for the main access road, and to provide specific mitigation techniques for identified hazards. Challenges included road cuts through hard basalt, road construction over soft river deposits, and avoidance of rockfall hazards at the base of steep slopes.
